Volunteer Opportunities at Camp

Better Impact: Summer Camp Youth Volunteer Application

Our Summer Camp program welcomes Youth Volunteers, ages 14 – 17, to support the informal science education led by Camp Staff. Camp Volunteers prepare the classroom for the day, help the Camp Educator and Camp Counselor with classroom management, and work directly with the kids on a wide variety of experiments, projects, and activities. Volunteers help provide a fun and safe environment while assisting campers in their exploration of science!

Camp Schedule for 2026:

Camps run May 26 – August 21 at the Museum in Durham. We will also offer camp at the Montessori Community School of Chapel Hill from June 15 to July 31. Volunteers must be able to work from 7:45 am to 3:30 pm each camp day. Volunteers attending school on a traditional calendar must be able to work for a minimum of two full weeks of camp.

Requirements:
• Be at least 14 years old by May 26, 2026
• Have experience working with young children and in positions of responsibility
• Have demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team
• Have an interest in science
• All application materials must be submitted online by April 1, 2026 by midnight

How to Apply:

If you are interested in joining our Summer Camp Youth Volunteer Program, you must submit an application. If this is your first time applying, you are required to submit (2) Teacher/Mentor Recommendations using a form that will be given to you when the application is submitted. Returning volunteers do not need to submit Teacher/Mentor Recommendations. You will also receive an Availability Form where you can select which Camp you would like to volunteer with and what weeks you are available to volunteer. All volunteers who apply must complete their Availability Form to be considered. All application materials must be submitted online by April 1, 2026, at midnight.

Selection Process:

After reviewing completed applications, new candidates will be scheduled to interview at the Museum of Life and Science. Volunteer interviews will occur at the Museum with the Volunteer Coordinator and the volunteer applicant. Final decisions will be made by May. We have limited spots available, so unfortunately, not every applicant will be chosen. Returning volunteers will be given priority. All who are selected to join our program must attend Summer Camp Youth Volunteer Orientation, which occurs in May.
